Because the p1 upper receiver is a gas piston system, it runs cooler, cleaner, and more reliably than those with a direct gas impingement system. To eliminate any carrier tilt that might damage the receiver extension, the p1's bolt carrier is equipped with enlarged "skis" to guide it into the tube.
